Nauru Information & Trip Planning

We know very little about the history of the settlement of the island of Nauru. Significantly only one thing is clear - about three thousand years ago this lost in the ocean piece of land began to be developed by the famous "sea people" - the ancestors of modern Polynesians and Micronesians, who carried on their fragile canoes throws from island to island and thereby occupying the Great ocean. Called by locals Naoero, the island was discovered for Europeans by the British whaler John Firn, accidentally encounter the shocking unknown land in 1798. It is from him that the island received its first European name - pleasant island. And only people who visit these waters, and there remained were only the whalers, slave traders, lumberjacks and pirates.

In 1888, Nauru, along with the other Islands of the region was annexed by Germany, becoming a part of the German Marshall Islands. After the defeat of Germany during the First World War, the island became part of the British mandate territory and was placed under the control of Australia, and only in 1968, the country was granted full independence by logging on to the special rights of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Small and rather boring city Aren is located in the homonymous district in the South of the island. Its main attractions are usually related to complex Houses of Parliament, offices of the administration and police offices, concentrated in a narrow strip between the runway of the airfield and the coastline. On the other side of the airfield, in the wall of the coastal cliffs, is the entrance to the main local natural attraction, the caves and a small underground lake.

You can also see two small Museum and the remains of the Japanese defensive positions of World War II, whose numerous bunkers and revetments, left untouched after the war, still contain some of the weapons of the time.

In the complex of the National office for tourism is located the Center of arts and crafts, which accounted for the majority of literally miraculously preserved samples of products of local handicrafts, stone tools of the indigenous inhabitants of the island, fishing gear and garments in the first place "Inguri" - traditional skirts made from fibres obtained from the leaves of hibiscus.

In the Eastern part of the island is a district Anibare surrounding the Gulf. The gentle arc of the Gulf Anymore includes the best beach Nauru, with excellent facilities for passive recreation by the sea. Bathing here is a kind of extreme tourism because the oceanic currents near the coast of the Bay are quite strong and can be dangerous with its power and unpredictability.

Mountain range of Commands ridge - the highest point of Nauru. Hence, with the top point, you can take a single glance the whole island and explore the Japanese defensive positions, which remain the two big coastal defense guns, once the gunman shells, tank connection, and a network of trenches and galleries.
